The University of California Institute for Research in the Arts supports embedded arts research through critical exchange

UCSB Middle Eastern Ensemble Winter Concert this Saturday, March 5th 8pm

The UCSB Middle East Ensemble will present its formal Winter Quarter concert on Saturday, March 5.

The concert will feature Bahram Osqueezadeh, leading the Ensemble in a suite of Persian music, and a great variety of Arab, Armenian, and Sephardic songs. Daniel Tuutau will sing two Arabic songs, one from 19th-century Egypt, the other a 2010 song from Lebanon. Giselle Garcia will sing a song by the Egyptian superstar, Umm Kulthum (d.1975). Lillie Gordon will present a song by the Algerian singer, Warda (b.1939). Melanie Hutton will sing a Sephardic song. In addition, the Ensembleʼs chorus will present three Armenian songs from the Western regions of Armenian culture.

As always, the Ensembleʼs Dance Troupe will present a wonderful variety of dances, from Arab, Baluchi, Greek, and Turkish cultures. Cris! Basimah, the director of the Ensembleʼs dance troupe, will present a rousing dance finale to close the concert. We are also proud to feature dances by the UCSB Armenian Student Association Dance Team and by the Lebanese Club @ UCSB.
