Storytelling through Thread with Karen Hampton

In the exhibition Bearing Witness: Embroidery as History in Post-Apartheid South Africa, narrative embroideries recount historical events and personal stories. Los Angeles-based artist Karen Hampton too uses the art of embroidery, coupled with found textiles, to recount her own complex family history and thus give voice to long-forgotten stories that tell about African-American experience. In this afternoon embroidery workshop for adults, participants will learn stitching techniques to “draw with thread” and relate their own personal narratives. Materials will be provided and no experience is needed.

Fowler members $30; general $35.
Registration: fowlerprograms@arts.ucla.edu

Presented in conjunction with The Big Draw LA, a public drawing celebration spanning Southern California linked to events worldwide during the month of October.
