“Sounding Out”: Mediations of Reconciliation in Australia

UCSB
SSMS Screening Room
Thursday, May 26th
2-6pm

This projected installation will map the audiovisual histories of indigenous reconciliation in contemporary Australia using Google Maps and Google Earth. The audiovisual content will consist of material (e.g. radio recordings) from the NFSA (National Film and Sounds Archive of Australia) and Youtube. The exhibition of Sounding Out will engage with students and teachers in the UCSB community and show them how Google Maps and Google Earth can be useful tools for understanding and exploring contemporary indigenous problems. This project pursues new modes of representing political cultural identity and produces multi-layered impression of how mapping audiovisual media can be an important object of study in the humanities and social sciences.
