The University of California Institute for Research in the Arts supports embedded arts research through critical exchange

Time-Based Art and Neighborhood Ecologies at UC Berkeley

The Arts Research Center’s Art + Time and Art + Neighborhood research groups are joining together to sponsor this daylong symposium, which will make use of the presence in the Bay Area of three artists whose socially engaged work comes from different arts fields:

  • Marc Bamuthi Joseph, dancer/spoken word artist, Artistic Director of Life is Living urban performance/environmental action
  • Theaster Gates, Chicago-based ceramist, architect, and urban artist
  • Michael John Garcés, Artistic Director of Cornerstone Theater, Los Angeles

Other artists and scholars scheduled to participate include:

  • Allison Smith, sculptor/ceramicist/public artist
  • Amanda Eicher, Citizens Laboratory
  • Sean San José, Campo Santo
  • Brandi Wilkins Cantanese, Theater, Dance & Performance Studies and African American Studies, UC Berkeley
  • Dee Hibbert-Jones, Art, UC Santa Cruz
  • Shannon Jackson, Theater, Dance & Performance Studies and Rhetoric, UC Berkeley
