Theatre Communications Group Accepting Proposals for New Generations Program Future Leaders and Future Audiences Grants

Funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and administered by the Theatre Communications Group, the New Generations Program is accepting preliminary proposals for round eleven of its Future Leaders and Future Audiences program.

The Future Leaders program seeks to identify exceptionally talented theater professionals who will impact the field in a positive way. The program hopes to nurture future leaders in all areas of theater including but not limited to acting, administration/management, craft areas, design, directing, dramaturgy/literary management, playwriting, producing, stage management, and technical production. In round eleven, eighteen-month grants of $80,000 per theater ($40,000 per nine-month period) will be given to foster relationships and develop a new generation of leaders through mentorship programs. Up to an additional $10,000 per grant ($5,000 per nine-month period) will be available upon request either to defray outstanding student loans or to meet unique travel and legal costs incurred when an international mentee is selected.

The Future Audiences program will provide theaters that have a successful track record of reaching age-specific, culturally specific, and/or underserved communities with a matching grant of up to $65,000 ($32,500 per year) to support the development or expansion of technology aimed at cultivating a diverse audience. Up to $5,000 in additional funding will be available to help recipients transition out of the program. Applications will be accepted from theaters for which support will allow expansion or significant improvement of efforts that have proven to be successful and have been implemented for at least two years. Applications will not be accepted to create new programs, but new strategies created as part of an existing program are eligible.

All applicant theaters must have 501(c)(3) status; be located within the United States or its territories; employ at least one full-time salaried staff person; have a minimum of three years’ prior existence as a nonprofit professional organization; have a history of mounting its own theater productions within the previous year; and possess the organizational capacity to implement the projected activity. Theaters may only apply to one program, either Future Leaders or Future Audiences.

The New Generations program is designed primarily to serve producing theater organizations and not other organizations whose primary mission is audience development, advocacy, or other service-related goals. However, the panel will consider applications from non-producing organizations that are actively engaged in the development of new theatrical work and new theater artists.
