The exhibition examines the work of Whitney Smith (1911-2002) and his firm with partner Wayne Williams (1919-2007) in the context of postwar southern California, 1940-1973. The exhibit places Smith and Williams’ work in the context of their contemporaries, such as Gregory Ain, J. R. Davidson, Raphael Soriano, Thornton Abell, Maynard Lyndon, and the modern landscape architect Garrett Eckbo, who worked with many of these figures. Smith’s status derives in particular from the subtle and innovative spaces he created. The aim of the exhibit is not merely to present a monographic study of Smith and Williams, but to look at the firm’s designs through one striking theme that characterizes nearly all of the remarkable work by Smith and Williams. This theme is the relationship of building to site, inside to outside. The exhibit draws from the rich architectural collections at the Art, Design & Architecture Museum, UC Santa Barbara.
