NEW VOICES – NEW VISIONS Open Call – enter by December 31, 2012

Marin County contemporary art gallery Gallery Bergelli announces open call for New Voices – New Visions Exhibition. From an interest in supporting young Bay Area artists, New Voices – New Visions will acknowledge talented local artists with a group exhibition, and will choose one artist to receive a $1000 Best of Show Award.

The New Voices – New Visions exhibition will take place at Gallery Bergelli, downtown Larkspur, from March 14 to April 17, 2013. From the Open Call for submissions, a select number of artists will be announced on January 7, 2013. The Best of Show prize will be awarded at the Opening of the show on March 23, 2013. In addition, the Best of Show award recipient will be invited to participate in a future Gallery Bergelli group exhibition in 2014.

Emerging Bay Area Artists have an opportunity to follow in the tradition of historical innovation, the most important being the Bay Area Figurative Movement. The movement remains important in the history of American art. The Bay Area Figurative Movement was the West Coast’s answer to the New York school of Abstract Expressionism. The First Generation Bay Area Figurative School artists included David Park, Richard Diebenkorn, Wayne Thiebaud, Elmer Bischoff and James Weeks, all at the center of this cultural renaissance that reintroduced the human figure. Encompassing two decades, figuration served as a bridge to Pop Art, Conceptual Art, New Image Painting and Neo-Expressionism.

The Bay Area is known as a hot bed for creativity, both within the art world and outside of the art world, with Silicon Valley as perhaps the most graphic example. With the New Voices – New Visions Exhibition, Gallery Bergelli will select work that best depicts new trends and directions in contemporary art.
