At Sixes and Sevens

An Exhibition of Thirteen Recent UC San Diego MFA Graduates

Date: March 15, 2014, 7-10PM

One Night Only!

Location: Pieter Performance Space, 420 W. Ave. 33, Ste. 10, Los Angeles, California 90031

Pieter is delighted to present At Sixes and Sevens, a one-night exhibition event curated by Louis M Schmidt, highlighting works by thirteen recent graduates of UCSD’s Visual Arts MFA Program. At Sixes and Sevens brings together a group of (mostly) disparate art practices and individuals, related by their pedagogical upbringing and now subsequently residing in Los Angeles, CA. The thirteen artists in the exhibition command a significant list of accomplishments, and work in forms both radical and traditional- from figurative oil painting to conceptual drawing and sculpture; primal performance, and video works ranging from absurdist to sublime. Please join us for this very special occasion!

“At Sixes and Sevens”, a phrase etymologically rooted in Chaucer’s 1374 poem Troilus and Criseyde, originally referred to a 14th century game of dice and meant “to carelessly risk one’s entire fortune”. Over time, the phrase has evolved into one referring to a “state of confusion, disorder or disagreement”. However, both meanings now perfectly encapsulate the current post-graduate school arena- where risk, confusion and/or disagreement swirl together around the early stages of an artist’s career, adding to the complex challenge of establishing oneself upon the dynamic, challenging and ever-shifting platform of the contemporary art scene. The subsequent exhibition wholeheartedly embraces the converging and diverging paths of these individuals, willfully placing them “at sixes and sevens” in order to highlight works by some of LA’s most ambitious and engaging artists.

Participating artists include: Sadie Barnette, Rich Bott, Ted Chung, Micki Davis, Julia Dzwonkoski, Deanna Erdmann, Christopher Kardambikis, Vince Manganello, Elle Mehrmand, Jesse Mockrin, Zac Monday, Louis M Schmidt and Tim Schwartz.

With organizational assistance from Professor Amy Adler and AlumJesse Mockrin. Made possible by generous support from the UC San Diego Department of Visual Arts and UCSD Alumni Association.
