Malibu Stage Company seeks Artistic Director

About: MALIBU STAGE COMPANY, a 99-seat not-for-profit theatre located near Zuma Beach in Malibu, CA is seeking an Artistic Director.  The theatre operates under the Equity 99-seat plan, sits in Los Angeles County, and has a current season underway with four productions scheduled through May 2013.  Malibu Stage Company was created in 1990 as a 501c3 organization and has presented a wide variety of plays, often working with celebrity talent.

Note that the position will be hired as of December 1, 2012, however, the Artistic Director will be “incoming” for the 2013-2014 Season.  The current Artistic Director will be overseeing plays through the end of the 2012-2013 season.

The Artistic Director will be responsible for the following:
·  Conceiving & developing the artistic vision of the theatre, bringing it to the board for approval, and developing this vision moving forward, taking into account past productions and levels of success
·  Creating a written fundraising plan for the theatre and budget for productions, starting with the 2013-2014 season; overseeing fundraising efforts to support each season, and creating budgets for each play
·      Selecting plays for the upcoming season, securing rights, and working to create an effective and manageable schedule for their presentation
·      Establishing a high level of quality for productions and maintaining consistency in this area from one production to the next
·      Providing leadership and focus during this time of transition; providing leadership and vision for growth of the theatre in the future
·      Overseeing all operational aspects of the theatre, including facilities
·      Providing consistency and clear communication in all interactions, and being attentive to the high-level of community involvement that currently exists
·      Organizing the currently established group of theatre volunteers in areas including: fundraising, production, publicity, front-of-house, box office and more
·      Maintaining good relationships with two Children’s Theatre groups currently using the theatre space and other occasional rental groups
·      Interfacing with the Chairman of the Board on theatre business, attending Board meetings to keep the Board informed, and helping to establish a structure & team of other individuals who will support the AD & theatre in its mission
·      Interfacing with the outgoing Artistic Director to facilitate a smooth transition.

Qualifications for the position include:

·      Previous professional theatre experience in producing 99-seat (or greater) productions a must, previous Artistic Direction experience preferred
·      Previously demonstrated fundraising skills, including grants and the grant-writing process, plus contacts in this area; ability to keep productions and the theatre organization on track financially
·      Solid leadership skills; ability to team build, and work within an already established community of artists, actors, designers, and theatre supporters
·      Skilled as a collaborator, with strong organizational skills and the ability to delegate work to others
·      Must have good communication skills, both written and verbal, good people skills, and the ability to keep up with emails, phone calls, and all correspondence
·      Knowledge of marketing/PR/promotion and social networking methods
·      Resourcefulness and creativity; as organization is a not-for-profit, must show previous experience of being able to stretch a budget, and draw on various resources to get the show up
·      Brings experience as well as ingenuity to the job
·      Knowledge, understanding, and familiarity with the Malibu Community preferred.

Position is non-paid at this time.  No additional benefits at this time.  However, this is an excellent opportunity for someone who wishes to grow the theatre, and with growth compensation may be possible.
