Lucy Burns: Making Theater for Asian Americans in Los Angeles: A Play Reading and a Panel Discussion

Lucy Burns (UC Los Angeles): $1,000 for Making Theater for Asian Americans in Los Angeles: A Play Reading and a Panel Discussion. Co-Sponsorship

The artist organized a short-artist residency for write R. Zomora Linmark at UCLA in April 2013. Linmark’s week-long residency included a play reading and a panel discussion, both open to the public, a creative writing workshop for graduate and undergraduate students, and a meeting with students who are seeking to integrate artistic practice in their research work. The residence opens with a reading of a play-in-progress, But, Beautiful, a collaboration between me as the dramaturg and writer Linmark. The play explored the contemporary phenomenon of global export labor, in particular the toll it takes on individuals as well as on kinship structures such as the family. Following the reading, a panel of artists will initiate a discussion on theater making and Asian American artists in Los Angeles, commenting on the ongoing exclusionary practice of American theater, but focusing on their own theater making to highlight inclusionary practice.
