Keith McCleary: ComiCraft

Keith McCleary (UC San Diego): $5,000 for ComiCraft. Open Classroom Challenge

ComiCraft is a course designed to fulfill both the objectives of the CAT 125 Practicum and the CAT 124 thesis seminar in a workshop about graphic texts, media literacy, and the ways in which we are both representative of and accountable to the cultures, traditions, and art practices that surround us. Students will create and distribute zines about subjects of local concern, conduct interviews with and tell visual stories of members of underrepresented communities, and reappropriate public domain comics to explore how pop culture shapes out stereotypes and beliefs. The course will culminate with a printed graphic novel anthology of student work, a digital media project, and a curatorial paper and artist statement developed by each student.
