JazzPOP enters its sixth year of jazz without borders at the Hammer, bringing three wildly inventive and daringly original groups to perform in the courtyard on the first three Thursdays in August. Curated by San Francisco bassist Lisa Mezzacappa.

“Thoroughly original, endlessly creative, unabashedly modern… this stuff grooves and simmers.“ —JazzTimes

Todd Sickafoose’s Tiny Resistors
Jenny Scheinman (violin), Ara Anderson (trumpet), Erik Deutsch (piano), Jonathan Goldberger (guitar), Mark Ferber (drums), Todd Sickafoose (bass).

Bassist/composer Todd Sickafoose’s band is a marvel of musical cross-breeding, pairing indie rock muscle and whimsy with the extended forms, timbres, and sophistication of a jazz orchestra. Sickafoose, a longtime sideperson and duo-mate of Ani DiFranco, has assembled a cross-coastal band that includes some of jazz’s most versatile musicians, including violinist Jenny Scheinman and trumpeter Ara Anderson. Their newest recording “Tiny Resistors” (Cryptogramophone) has been called “thoroughly original, endlessly creative…one of the year’s most compelling listens” (JazzTimes), “stunningly brilliant…a modern jazz masterpiece” (Bassplayer), and “a one-disc explanation of why today’s Brooklyn jazz scene is so exciting” (HotHouse). Sickafoose’s bandmates have also spent years of musicmaking with everyone from Bill Frisell, Tom Waits, Norah Jones, Tin Hat, Lucinda Williams, and Andrew Bird.
