Lifetime Cal Aggie Alumni Bill and Sharon Dianne Hollingshead, curators of the Paul W. Hollingshead photo archives, bring the original prints of Bill’s father’s masterful photography as art to the Nelson Gallery. Hollingshead, a 1923 graduate of the New York Institute of Photography was the first hired by world renowned photographer Edward Steichen, working at his side for 5 1/2 years as a high fashion photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines.

Paul and his new bride Vera returned to California in 1928 with studios in San Francisco, Oakland and San Leandro. In 1932 they moved to Woodland to share the big city talent and artistry with the small northern California farm community. For four decades Hollingshead artistically captured Yolo County society, agriculture and architecture with sparkling images documenting a large chapter of the Yolo County twentieth century history.

The image is a wedding self portrait of Paul W. and Vera Hollingshead taken on March 20, 1927 at the Edward Steichen Studio in New York.
