The Geffen Playhouse and the La Jolla Playhouse are reaching out to military families as part of a new, nationwide program offering discounted or complimentary tickets to active-duty military personnel, veterans and their families.

Blue Star Theatres is a nationwide program that officially will be launched Friday. The program is organized by Theatre Communications Group, the nonprofit organization that promotes theater around the country, and Blue Star Families, a support organization for military families.

As part of the program, the Geffen Playhouse is offering a limited number of complimentary tickets to active-duty military personnel, veterans and their families. The company said people who serve or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces can receive up to four complimentary tickets to any same-day performance, subject to availability.

The Geffen said interested personnel should call (310) 208-2028 and provide the code BLUESTAR.

The La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego said it is offering discounted $25 tickets as part of the program. The offer is good for the first two weeks of any production, excluding opening night. Tickets are also subject to availability.

Interested military personnel can obtain the discounted tickets by visiting La Jolla Playhouse’s website and providing the code BLUESTAR.

Other theater companies participating in the program are American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco; the California Shakespeare Theatre in Orinda; the Signature Theatre in Arlington, Va.; the HERE Arts Center in New York; and the Trinity Repertory Co. in Rhode Island.

Blue Star also organizes an annual program offering free museum admission for military personnel and their families. The museum program is a partnership with the Department of Defense and the National Endowment for the Arts.
