Micha Cardenas: Collective Art Practice – Performative and Networked Approaches to Challenging Power

Micha Cardenas (UC San Diego)

This course looks at the history of collective art practice, its motivations and its trajectory, situating it within contemporary art practice. It goes on to look in more detail at contemporary art collectives and their motivations, their ties to contemporary politics of globalization, and efforts to maintain an egalitarian non-hierarchical collective practice. The main goal is for students to create collective projects responding to local social conditions in the San Diego/Tijuana boarder region, building on this understand of collective practice and, ideally, to begin long term sustainable collectives within which to continue the practice.
