Claire Trevor School of the Arts Unveils Artists-in-Residence Independent Study Program in Studio Art

The Claire Trevor School of the Arts (CTSA) unveils its newest program: the Artists-in-Residence (AIR) Independent Study Program in Studio Art. AIR provides participants with opportunities to learn, create, curate and exhibit in association with the Department of Studio Art.

AIR has two program tracks: a 9-month Artist’s Track, and a year-long Curatorial Track, each with its own set of emphasis but interdependent of each other. The Artist’s Track participants will initiate and create art works under the direction of Program Director and Dean of CTSA, Joseph S. Lewis. In collaboration with the Curatorial Track, works produced by participants in the Artist’s Track will be selected and exhibited in one of the campus galleries. The Curatorial Track provides participants with a working knowlege of the issues surrounding exhibition design, and the experience of selecting, organizing, installing and publicizing an exhibition, under the direction of Professor of Critical and Curatorial Studies and Director of the University Art Galleries Juli Carson. Curatorial Track participants will develop a proposal for the culminating exhibition, select work, design exhibition, create exhibition catalogue, and oversee installation and de-installation of work.

All participants will be provided with their own studio on the UC Irvine campus, the opportunity to take courses from the University’s extensive catalog and/or through the University Extension, and access to visiting artists. In addition, all participants will meet periodically with the Program Director and/or Curatorial Director to shape participant’s artistic direction, to critique work, and to discuss related matters. Within this context, participants will design their own individualized programs, in collaboration with the Program Director and/or Curatorial Director.

Participation in AIR does not guarantee acceptance into any CTSA MFA program.
