Bruce Yonemoto: Enka!

Bruce Yonemoto (UC Irvine): $10,000 for Enka! Visual Arts Practice and Research

The word enka is derived from en (a short form of enzestu, meaning (“public performance”) and ka (“song”). Bruce Yonemoto will research and make a digital film of new versions of enka songs enlisting the help of the performance art community in California as well as Taipei. He will ask performance artists, writers and poets to compose new lyrics to old enka standards and melodies. Through this process, the artist hopes to update the practice of using the familiar enka form of five-seven syllable ballads and pentatonic scale to make contemporary music and communicate personal and public issues that have resonance in the world today.
