JOB OPPORTUNITY: UCSC Chair of the Art Department and Artist/Practitioner in Social Practice or Environmental Arts Associate or Full Professor

The Art Department of the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for a chair of the department/tenured faculty position. The successful candidate will become a principle figure in our proposed MFA program in Social and Environmental Arts Practice. We are seeking an innovative arts practitioner with distinguished research in the field of social practice and/or environmental arts. This practicing artist/researcher should have a strong theoretical background in fields related to social practice or environmental arts, have a creative interest in digital/print/new media and engage in collaborative practice across the arts, humanities and sciences. The successful candidate will chair the Art Department, guide the innovative directions taking place in our newly redesigned undergraduate program, and teach in both graduate and undergraduate art programs. We seek an individual with vision to help us launch our graduate and redesigned undergraduate programs at this seminal time in our history. We seek candidates with university level teaching experience who are able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide variety of social and cultural backgrounds, and are able to forge and maintain affiliations in related fields of study in other departments and schools on campus.
We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and service. The campus currently operates on a schedule of three 11-week quarters per academic year. This position entails: teaching 5 five-unit courses per year, or their equivalent, in accordance with the department’s workload policy; advising and mentoring students; actively engaging in research activity; and actively participating in administrative responsibilities for the department, affiliated college, and the campus.


RANK: Associate Professor to Full Professor


SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience, and level of appointment


Terminal degree required (MFA or other). Solid understanding of scholarly theoretical research in the field of social practice and environmental arts. An established and rising practice-based research profile demonstrated through publications, exhibitions and research projects. Experience working with graduate students and graduate education in the arts.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D.(practice or research based), demonstrated leadership experience in chairing a department/administration, and a high level of technical proficiency and knowledge of current new media, digital and/or print media.


POSITION AVAILABLE: July 1, 2012, with academic year commencing Fall 2012. Position is contingent upon final budgetary approval.
