Artist Call- “Genus, Species”: Group Exhibition in San Francisco, CA

In addition to our November 2011 featured solo exhibition by Sandra Yagi (, we will be hosting a group show entitled “Genus, Species”. We are looking for small-sized works in the inspiration of Scientific Botanical or Anatomical illustrations with your own unique twist on the traditional style. For this show, we are asking that each artist creates their own unique either animal or plant so if you would like to participate, please let us know what genus and species you choose and we will make sure no one else overlaps. If you are at a loss for ideas, we can assign you a genus, species (we are full of ideas!). Also, we would like you to include the proper Latin name on the artwork as in a traditional scientific illustration. For inspiration, check out the classic Ernst Haeckel’s illustrations and artwork.

SIZE RESTRAINTS: exactly 8×10 inches, portrait. Portrait means the short side is on top (8) and the long side (10) is the side. If you would like to frame your piece, please keep in mind wall space is limited. We prefer a slim profile frame no larger than 1 inch wide. All pieces must be wired, ready to hang, and dry before dropping off. Each artist can submit 1 piece. If you do not follow our size restraints, you may be designated to “The Wall of Shame” …or worse.

SHIPPING: If you are shipping your art and would like us to return your piece in the event it does not sell, please include a pre-paid shipping label with your artwork along with the necessary paperwork to be received on or before the drop-off deadline (October 1, 2011). *Please note: Modern Eden is not responsible for any shipping costs for group exhibitions, all shipping costs to and from the gallery need to be covered by exhibiting artist.
Please ship to: Modern Eden Gallery, 403 Francisco Street, San Francisco, CA  94133

If you would like to participate, please e-mail us at Please note that our shows usually fill up quickly and space is limited. The sooner you contact us, the better your chance is that there will be space to exhibit. As always, local San Francisco (+ Bay Area) artists will receive priority.

If you are a new exhibiting artist, please send either JPEG(s) or a link to images of the piece you would like to exhibit or a sampling of your previous work which can serve as a close example of what to expect. Please do not assume you are in the show, you will need to receive a confirmation e-mail from a gallery representative after you send images/link.

*When deciding whether to submit, please take a look at Modern Eden’s website ( for a good indication of our aesthetic. Our aesthetic focuses on figurative and illustrative paintings in genres ranging from realism to surrealism. Please, only original artworks, prints will not be considered for submission.

Drop off DEADLINE: Sunday November 6th (anytime before works too) for Opening Reception on November 12, 2011
