Artist Call- Call for New, Unproduced Plays

For Southern CA artists

CYGNET THEATRE, IN ASSOCIATION WITH PLAYWRIGHT PROJECT, SEEKS NEW PLAYS FOR PLAYWRIGHTS IN PROCESS, A THREE DAY FESTIVAL FOCUSED ON NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT

Cygnet Theatre, in association with Playwrights Project, requests original, un-produced plays for 2nd Annual Playwrights in Process Festival (PiP). The Festival is three days of audience-focused workshops, pre-performance receptions, and post-show discussions focused around the four selected plays. As part of PiP, playwrights will be afforded an exciting opportunity to have their plays developed in a multi-stage process. Writers will work with a director/dramaturg from selection confirmation through the festival. Cygnet will provide professional actors for two, private table readings. After each, the playwright will work with her/his mentor to further develop the play. The final revision will be rehearsed and presented before a discerning, theatre audience. Through a facilitated discussion, the writers will receive audience feedback on the play to help playwrights further develop their plays to better prepare the works for future productions

WHAT TO SUBMIT:

Playwrights are asked to submit full-length plays that can be performed by five actors or less. The works can be comedies or dramas; musicals, with the same cast size restrictions, will be accepted. The music must be able to be performed with piano-only and/or minimal instrument accompaniment. All works must be new plays (or musicals) that have not received a previous production. A preference will be given to works still in the development stage, but complete enough to benefit from the process.

WHO MAY SUBMIT:

We seek writers committed to developing theirs scripts, and who have a collaborative attitude and a strong self-motivated work ethic. While Southern California writers are given a preference, playwrights outside of the geographic area are welcome to submit. As part of the process, selected playwrights will need to attend the table readings of their work, as well as the festival and the post-performance discussion. While we hope to provide accommodations, stipend, and travel in the future, at this nascent stage of the festival, there is no funding for these allowances, hence, the preference for local/southern California playwrights. Playwrights outside of the area will be responsible for meeting rehearsal and performance attendance requirements.

HOW TO SUBMIT: interested playwrights may submit in one of two ways!

Fill out the submission form at www.playwrightsproject.org/Playwrights_in_Process , click on “Submit Your script Here,” and upload the play (or book and music) as instructed
Writers can mail submissions to Playwrights in Progress, Playwrights Project, 2590 Truxtun Rd., Suite 202, San Diego, CA 92106

DEADLINE:

Scripts and submission forms must be submitted by 5PM, April 30, 2013
