Artist Call – California State Parks Special Interest License Plate and art contest


Be a Part of California State Parks!

You are invited to participate in a design contest for art work which will be used for a California State Parks Special Interest License Plate. The winning design will be displayed on potentially millions of vehicles in California and wherever California vehicles travel nationwide. Proceeds from the sale of the California State Parks License Plate will help support Restoration and Preservation of our State’s 280 State Parks.

The donated artwork must depict a California Redwood Tree, an iconic feature of California State Parks, and will cover the full face of the license plate. The artwork must be an original, unpublished, donated work. No name or identifying information may appear on the artwork itself. The contest is open to all California residents. However, California State Park employees are not eligible to enter. The winner of the contest will be announced on June 30, 2014 on our website. Availability to commence purchasing of the Special Interest License Plate is anticipated to commence September 1, 2014.

Design Requirements

Design size must be 6” x 12” (layout specifications and sample plate specification PDF “click here”)

Use of Four (4) colors maximum (can be mixed)

Must be submitted in a digital format such as a .JPG file

Note: The design should not interfere or distract from the intent of the license plate which is to easily decipher the letters and numbers during the day or night. The design selected must ultimately be approved for use by the California Department of Motor Vehicles and California Highway Patrol, prior to implementation.

If approved by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, the following phrase will be placed in the 6.1675 X.3” area between the two bottom attaching points on the Plate: “Enjoy California State Parks”.

Entry Deadline & Delivery

Entries should be delivered electronically to California State Parks via email at: along with the Entry form and Donation and Waiver release form (Click here) by: June 15, 2014.

Please use your name in the email subject line as follows: Last Name, First Name. (Don’t forget to attach the Entry form and Donation and Waiver release form or the artwork cannot be used or considered for entry into the contest).

Terms of Contest

The State of California Department of Parks and Recreation reserves the right to accept, or reject all work submitted during this competition and to use, and/or reproduce the work consistent with promoting the goodwill of the Department and the Department’s goals. The Department of Parks and Recreation accepts no liability for late, damaged or lost art works.

By submission of your work and the Entry form and Donation and Waiver release form, you agree to donate and release the work submitted for the Department’s use, to be used at no cost and at the sole discretion of the Department, throughout the Contest period or until a winner has been selected and that winning art work has been approved for use as a Special Interest License Plate design as announced on our web site.

The winner of the art work contest agrees to donate and release their work for the Department’s use in perpetuity and to be used at the sole discretion of the Department. The winning artwork will be promoted and used by California State Parks in any way it deems appropriate. All submitted artwork may be chosen for display at various California State Park units.

Selection Process

The winner will be announced June 30, 2014 on our website and will be contacted directly by a State Park representative. Entry constitutes permission to use the winner’s name, hometown and likeness for advertising and promotional purposes without further notice or compensation, except where prohibited by law.

Design will be judged on:

Creativity, inspiration, reproducibility, legibility of the lettering and numbering on the plate, and uniqueness demonstrated that best captures a California Redwood tree for use as a Special Interest License Plate.

By entering, entrants agree to be bound by these contest rules and the decisions of California State Parks, which will be binding and final in all respects.
