Artist Call- Breast Cancer Biennial

Ask not how your artwork could adorn the conference rooms and halls of a breast cancer research symposium. Ask how it could participate in the symposium-and in the discourse of medical research and embodied experience-by its presence.

This call is for artwork that engages the many issues raised by breast cancer. We welcome work by survivors or family members with a personal experience from which to draw, as well as work by any artist investigating environment/body contingency, the medical experience, research paradigms, disease, grief/loss and the body, gender, sexuality and reproduction, or other related terrain.

The California Breast Cancer Research Program holds symposia biennially, accompanied by art exhibitions. The upcoming conference and exhibition takes place on May 17th- 18th, 2013, at the Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa.

While the artwork will only be exhibited for the weekend of the symposium, it will be embedded and distributed within the event and seen by the sizeable conference population. Much of the artwork will be in public areas of the conference center and thus available for viewing by the general public and the artists’ collectors and guests as well. Credited images of artwork may (with the artist’s permission) be reproduced in print and/or web publications related to the conference and the exhibition.

There is no fee for submissions. Shipping is covered by CBCRP, however, Orange County and other nearby artists are encouraged to drop off work at the site-see entry form for dates/times.

The show space will accommodate 2-d and 3-d works, video, and performance. 2-d works should be under 36″ wide x 48″ high (some exceptions may apply). 3-d works must have under a 36″ diameter footprint (tall sculptures are encouraged).

Site-specific proposals are welcome. Before submitting such a proposal, please contact the curator at for further information about the site’s constraints, or to inquire about touring the site.

Performance works need not be created specifically for the site, but must be able to accommodate it. Performance works are limited to 15 minutes and will take place on Friday evening, May 17th, 2013 in the Fountain Terrace and/or the Fountain Terrace Patio (specific site may change without notice–please inquire). No stage is available for performers, however, a small performance space could be set aside in the room. Stageless performances that incorporate the whole room and/or patio (though both will be crowded) are encouraged. Please contact the curator at if you have any questions.
