Artist Call- 2nd Round of the LOOP Arts Grant

Deadline: March 1, 2013

Who Is Eligible?

*Bay Area Emerging and Established Artists who have a scheduled exhibitionc.

a. Bay Area as defined by the counties: Alameda, San Francisco, Contra Costa, Marin, Solano, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Napa, and Sonoma. We provide access to the printing facilities, but not live-in quarters. Being driving distance is paramount. (Though we’re walking distance from The Paramount!)

b. We are expecting artists ranging the entire spectrum (emerging to established) to apply for the LOOP Arts Grant. If your exhibitions are consistently selling out, or a single sale from an exhibition is enough for a down payment on a home, there are individuals who need this grant more than you. Please use your discretion. If you are a student this grant is NOT for you. You have the facilities.

c. If you don’t have proof of a scheduled exhibition you will not be considered for the grant. Our goal is to serve those who have the most need and will get the biggest bang for their residency. Large final prints for exhibition are our biggest printing costs. Need to print ten 30″ x 40”s? That’s what we’re here for!

Studio + Facilities

While in residence you will have access to our Canon iPF8300, a professional 44” ink jet printer that we run from a 2012 Mac Mini loaded with the CS5 Master Collection. It is connected to a 24” widescreen NEC P241W professional graphics monitor that is equipped with SpectraView software for color calibration. We maintain the calibration of both the printer and monitor to assure consistent printing quality.

Our 200 square foot studio is equipped with a 41” x 53” flat file that you will have access to while at LOOP Arts. Our walls are covered with galvanized sheet metal to hang prints with magnets for viewing and all of the lights in the space are daylight balanced.

Our studio is located in a warehouse in West Oakland, just four blocks from the 23rd and Telegraph Oakland gallery epicenter. We are less than a mile from the 19th Street BART Station. West Oakland is not Rockridge, but parking in front of our building is readily available and residents come and go at all hours of the day without incident, even late at night. Our building is home to AK Press and 1984 Printing and houses numerous artist studios as well as several apartments. LOOP Arts’ space is located off an indoor courtyard full of plants.

About the Grant

Grants will be awarded for between 1 week and 1 month. (If you have a smaller show to print for, and won’t need a full month, choosing a shorter residency will allow us to get more artists scheduled and in to print.) You will have 24 hour access to the studio during your residency. Though the grant is to make prints for a scheduled exhibition, you are welcome to print additional work, but you will be charged $2.50 per square foot to cover ink costs. Artists will provide their own paper.

Jurors will review the portfolios and statements and rank their choices. LOOP Arts will then go down the list and fill time slots, using applicants’ preferences to create an optimal, full schedule. We announce the winners and open up the next round immediately with a new juror and a deadline two months later. Reapplications are accepted and encouraged. We keep our application fees low so that if you don’t get chosen you’ll be able to reapply.

Grant Requirements

To keep LOOP Arts sustainable and around for future awardees we require that you donate two prints at the end of your residency. One will be kept as part of the LOOP Arts permanent collection. We will be creating a document of the Bay Area art scene and plan on eventually moving into a gallery space where selections from the collection will be exhibited. The second print will be used for fundraising to help cover operating costs and ensure that we can keep LOOP Arts going to support other artists for years to come. We will update your progress on the LOOP Arts blog and will keep up with our former grantees on our website on the GRANTEE page.
